Another Sign Of Normalcy

Before a routine doctor's appointment today I stopped at Five Guys for a guilty pleasure lunch. The restaurant's signage actually includes the words 'Burgers and Fries". That pretty much describes most of the menu, but they do also have great kosher style hot dogs and pretty good BLT and veggie sandwiches.

Since I've been eating a lot of heavy meals lately one of those veggie sandwiches, which has grilled onions, mushrooms, and green peppers topped with lettuce and tomatoes, sounded good. There are more than a dozen toppings you can add to any sandwich. Today I went with jalapenos, pickles, ketchup, and mustard.

And what's a sandwich without fries? In my opinion, Five Guys fries are some of the best. They use fresh potatoes, cut them on site, then fry them in peanut oil so that they're crunchy on the outside and have the texture of a baked potato on the inside. (The 'Little' size is way more than one person should consume. I always try to restrain myself, but usually end up eating most or all of them. Shame on me.)

While I waited for my food I helped myself to a scoop of peanuts in the shell from the box by the cashier, and smiled while I was doing it. During the worst of the COVID epidemic the boxes were stashed away for safety reasons. If you wanted peanuts you had to ask at the counter and they would give you a sealed paper sack. The restaurant may still have its Plexiglass guards at the cash register, employees wearing masks, and prominent social distancing signage, but some things are returning to normal.

  1. My boys have brought Five Guys home before (and I agree, their fries are both delicious and overly generous, all 4 of us share an order), but I've actually never been there. I had no idea they had Kosher hot dogs and veggie sandwiches.

    1. If Hubby Tony is with me he and I will each get a sandwich and share the fries. Much better for my diet that way.

  3. The description of 'Five Guys' menu made my mouth water. During winter, I usually gain weight and and only now I've finished shedding the additional pounds. So, still no fries and hot dogs for me.

    1. I don't know about you, but I'm finding that the older I get the harder that extra weight gets to lose.

  4. I've never been to Five Guys, but you're the second blogger to mention and give a thumb's up. You had me at peanuts in the shell!

  5. Five Guys and Habit Burger are big here in Fresno but I've not eaten at either one. A local hamburger company has just opened a new place near us that is tempting me, however, I have found a vegan burger food truck that is so delicious that it's ruined me for meat burgers.

    1. I think there was a Habit Burger close to Middle Son's old house but I've never eaten there. I rarely eat meat, but every once in a while it tastes really good.

  6. I hear they have great fries, but are overpriced. Still, been meaning to give them a try. Some time this summer, for sure. :)

    1. It is pricier than some burger places, but I think the food is really well prepared.

  7. I haven't been to Five Guys in a long time. There aren't any in town here, but when I go to Portland I've seen their stores. I love lettuce, tomato and cheese sandwiches. Add in a couple cucumber slices and that's my thing.

  8. I read once that studies of the mints in bowls left for customers at pizza express (or some place like that) always picked up a high percentage of urine. I suppose from people not washing their hands properly!
