On The Cusp Of Summer

The past month the temperatures have been all over the map, both significantly above and significantly below what is normal at this time of the year. Usually by the middle of May I've put all the heavy clothes away until the fall, but until just a couple of days ago I would start and end the day wearing jeans and a long sleeved shirt or a fleece over a short sleeved one, swapping them out for lighter weight clothes for a couple of hours in the middle of the day.

However, it's inevitable that the hot weather will be here at some point. Based based on the forecast for the next ten days it will be soon. This afternoon the temperature reached 70, with a high humidity that made it feel even warmer. Tomorrow will be ten degrees above that, and by the weekend it will be almost 90 degrees.

The furnace has been turned off for weeks. Depending on the outside conditions there's been a window or door open to let in the breeze. I'm always thankful if we can make it to the Memorial Day holiday before turning the air conditioner on. I doubt that will happen this year.

Knowing that soon the house will be closed up again, when I woke up this morning I spent ten minutes minutes listening to the outside sounds before I got out of bed. Over a backdrop of a gentle rainfall the trees were rustling and the birds were chirping. Occasionally a car would drive past. In the far distance I heard a train whistle. It was lovely.

  1. I love those days when I can sleep with the windows open and have a soft breeze overnight. They're few and far between, early spring and then again in early fall, but that's when I sleep best at night.

    1. I agree (although I do also like really cold nights where I can snuggle under the blankets).

  2. No windows open here. Too many occupants with allergies.

    1. I trust that your warm weather will arrive just when it's supposed to.

  4. Here near Nashville, the AC comes on in April if for nothing else to get rid of the humidity. This weekend we are getting low 90s.

    1. It makes sense you would warm up before St. Louis.

  6. We have already gotten close to 100 degrees, but this week is cooler. High winds are expected this week which will add to the fire danger. Enjoy your cool temps because we know it will soon be very warm. On another note, Santa Clara County just went into the yellow tier. I'm sure your kids are pleased.

    1. If I remember right your area doesn't have a lot of humidity to go with the heat. That makes a big difference in relative comfort, but doesn't help with fire prevention.

  7. Summer officially starts in June, but we already have the heat. I like to have all windows open for a breeze. I prefer it that way to the use of air-con. On some days, however, it's just not possible without air-con.

    1. My ideal world would allow open windows all summer. Unfortunately, I don't live in an area that's conducive for that.

  8. I closed the bedroom window this morning and turned on the air. Then I called maintenance to come rectify the flashing battery light in my thermostat, which he did, and then asked where I wanted the temperature set. Leave it at 78 I said. He muttered about that being damn hot and I said it's my electric bill.

    1. As long as you're in your own place you have the right to keep the thermostat wherever you want.

  9. We plunged back into gray with occasional drizzle. I don't think I could take the humidity.

    1. The summer humidity is my least favorite part of living in the area.
