Just A Little Disconcerting

Several weeks before my last plane trip I received an email from my charge card company with the subject Your Upcoming Travel Plans.

I hadn't shared any plans with them, and the whole thing felt slightly creepy. But when I opened the message it reminded me that we had paid for the airline tickets with that particular charge card. Based on that the company had made a note of the date we were leaving. The email went on to say the company had automatically added a travel notice to the card so it wouldn't get declined in the new area.

The whole thing made sense, but still felt a little Big Brother-ish.

  1. Some credit card companies block the card if it is used outside your geographical area just in case it is stolen. They advise you let them know before you travel away from home. It's a good precaution.

    God bless.

    1. On a family vacation back in the mid-90s we narrowly averted our card being blocked. Since then, I've tried to remember to call the company before each trip. I guess since they're taking care of it now I can cross that task off my pre-trip list.

  2. I know what you mean. The worst is the storing of 'cookies' so when you browse a website for say sandals you will see the sandals popping up on your Instagram for example.

  3. I like it when companies take care of me like that. Terry got a call last night from a place he was to start a medical therapy but his cardiologist had deemed no longer unnecessary. The cardiologist assured Terry his office would call and make the cancellations. They did not. Terry was very upset that the heart hospital thought him negligent in canceling. Sometimes you just want people to take care of you.

    1. I hate it when people or entities don't follow through on their promises. I hope he didn't incur any financial penalties for not cancelling the appointmen.

  5. Customer service is getting more and more servy. They don't know what's going to gain or lose them a customer.

  6. When I drove to Arizona in November, my card was declined the third time I tried to use it for gas. They thought someone was on the run with my card. I had to call and be like no, it’s called I’m on a 16 hour road trip. They said “next time, call us ahead of time to let us know.” I didn’t think I should have to call anyone and tell them, except my boss at the time.

    1. I guess technically you DON'T have to call them, unless you want to possibly have your purchases declined.

  7. That would feel creepy, like someone was watching. And listening.
