The Joys Of Modern Air Travel (NOT)

Son Donald is scheduled to fly this afternoon. The ticket that he bought back in late January left St. Louis early in the afternoon for a four-hour nonstop flight, and got him to his destination in time for dinner. It also fit the schedule of the people who were picking him up at the airport.

Yesterday he got a text from the airline saying that flight was cancelled. It offered several alternate options, but the most attractive one was already filled up by time Donald got to the company's website. He chose the next-most attractive option. It leaves approximately the same time as his original flight, but now he has two legs to contend with, and a two-hour layover in between. In addition, his ride from the airport had to re-arrange their schedule in order to be available for him.

  1. If we had "met" earlier you would have read about the myriad of flight issues we had over the 4 years my son was away at college. Worst was when the airline had a flight map available online and I could see exactly where his plane was. Until it disappeared from the map and the airline listing of "in the air" disappeared from the plane status. After my almost heart attack I finally was able to find out that he ended up landing far from home and had to stay overnight before they could book him the rest of the way home.

    1. I think I would have felt the same way as you...and would have stopped looking at that flight tracker.

  2. I'd rather travel across country in a covered wagon than fly, what with all I'm seeing of cancelled flights, rude airline workers, body scanners. I just read this morning about an incident of vomit on a seat, overlooked by cleaning crew, leading to the arrest, for creating a disturbance, of the boarding passenger wanting the mess cleaned up.

    1. OY! The problem is that our family is so spread out there is really no other alternative to the 'friendly' skies.

  3. Ah, yes. Sounds like my bus ride from Milwaukee to Chicago to catch the last flight coming from Raleigh, but no longer stopping in Milwaukee. It's crazy.

    1. He is quite familiar with using Uber, and I'm sure he will take that option if the others fall through.

  5. We do very little travel of any kind, and airline travel has me very troubled, especially because we live in a small town that does not go any where major! Most people drive to San Francisco or Los Angeles to take an airplane to their real destination. Our daughter, who lives in the Bay Area, has no trouble flying out of SFO.

    1. St. Louis used to be an airport hub back when TWA was still in business. However, over the years it's gotten harder and harder to find direct flights.

  6. I absolutely love flying. I’m the opposite. I love people watching in airports, too. However, it’s been more practical in the last few years to just drive ourselves where we wanted to go. I don’t know how I’d handle being overseas.

    1. I like the people-watching part, too. It's the going through Security and cramming myself into a full plane parts that stink.

  7. I hope that one works out and there are not further changes by the airline, who don't seem to keep any particular schedule for their passengers or deem one important.

    1. He was able to make it to his destination without any further hitches.

  8. Oh that STINKS! I hope things work out well here-on-out for Donald. I wish him safe travels! I haven't been on a plane for so long, I wouldn't know where to start. LOL

I wish you a Happy Sunday!
