Time To Sleep

If you do an internet search for sleep calculator there are millions of results. Tonight I played around with one of them-a website called Sleepytime, which claims to help you wake up refreshed by finding the best time to go to sleep.  

The site has three calculation options. You can put in what time you need to wake up, what time you plan on going to sleep, or what time you should wake up if you go to bed NOW.
 
I decided to try out the first option. I have to leave the house at 9:00 tomorrow morning. Because I like to move slowly, my alarm will be set for 6:30 am. I put that information into the drop-down boxes, hit calculate, and learned that I should try to fall asleep at 9:30 pm, 11:00 pm, 12:30 am, or 2:00am. I'm not sure why there were so many options. Maybe because some people need more sleep than others?

As an interesting side note, I learned that the average human takes fourteen minutes to fall asleep. I also found out that the site works by counting backwards in 90-minute sleep cycles. I know from past experience that if you wake up in between cycles you feel refreshed, and groggy if you wake up in the middle of a cycle.

    You answered your own question in the next paragraph. But that's assuming you fall asleep in 14 minutes. Not an easy thing to do sometimes.

    1. You're right about problems falling to sleep. Last night I timed myse4lf, and I think it was about 15 minutes-a good night for me.

  2. To wake up at a set time you need to tap your forehead with your finger the requisite number of times before going to sleep. Once I wanted to get up at 6:00am - so I tapped my forehead six times. To check I did it right I tapped again - and woke up at midday!

  3. I fall asleep far quicker than that 14 minutes, and now in retirement, don't need an alarm to wake except on those days with early morning obligations. We are usually up around 6, especially in the warmer months when it's light and warm at that time. I hate to waste a minute of my morning so I like to be up early.

    1. I hope I get to where I don't need an alarm. On the weekends (when the alarm is turned off) I'm naturally up by 7:30 at the latest, but that is too late to get me to most of my weekday commitments.

  4. Now I'm curious! I've almost always fallen asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow, but wake up several times during the night.

    1. Some nights I have trouble falling to sleep AND wake up multiple times. It's quite the double whammy.

  5. my husband is not typical. As soon as his head hots the pillow he starts snoring. Interesting info, though.

  6. I don't have that much control over when I fall asleep. If I'm not tired and I stop reading or watching tv, my brain won't shut down. If I want to try to fall asleep earlier, reading helps but I usually find it's best to wait until I'm good and tired, whenever that may be.

  9. There's NO WAY I can fall asleep in 14 minutes. However, my husband falls asleep in 5 minutes or less. I'm always envious.
