My Thoughts Exactly

 Some time ago I found ta lovely poem, called "Dust If You Must" by Rose Milligan. It describes my attitude towards housework perfectly. (I pretty much would rather do anything than dust. Or vacuum. Or straighten.)

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world's out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

I tried to find out more information about Rose but came up empty-handed. If you happen to know anything, please share.

  1. I have that in a book of Best Loved American poems. It suits me fine.
    Life is short.

  2. One of my friends has a rule with her four kids, husband and herself: If a mess bothers you, then clean it up.

  4. I dusted once. It came back! Fool me once...

  5. I hear you! These days, with clean heating, as opposed to smokey fireplaces, I do much less than my mother would have done. I am lacking energy, too. Of course, once spring comes I'll feel even less likely to do it!

    1. There's never a good time to clean, is there?

  6. One of my favorites. Reminds me of Erma Bombeck's If I Had My Life to Live Over.

  7. I can definitely relate! I bought those electronic things that are supposed to make your space less dusty. They really do work and that is a good thing. I have a cross-stitched piece that says "you can touch my dust, but please do not write in it". It is my mantra!
