Felicitous Footwear

The sprained ankle that I got over the weekend is a tiny bit better, but it's not anywhere close to normal yet. Yesterday I stayed inside, kept the ankle wrapped, elevated my leg and regularly iced the offending spot. In the evening I treated it to a lovely Epsom Salts soak.

However, as much as I'd like to repeat the same process today life goes on. I have to leave the house and actually do some walking between a parking lot and my destination.

Because of some off and on plantar fasciitis issues I always wear something on my feet, even in the house. My current house shoes are plastic Birkenstock sandals. In the five months since I've brought the pair home they've never gone outside.  I keep a pair of old, ratty shoes by the door to change into as I walk out, and then immediately change back into the sandals when I return. That way I'm not bringing any type of dirt or germs.

This morning when I tried to put on my tennis shoes, the bruise on my ankle said that wasn't a good idea. It also didn't like the pair of sandals I tried. I realized that my only option is to give my house shoes their first taste of outside freedom and wear them on my adventure. I wonder if they will enjoy it, or be annoyed that their inside pampering days are over?

  2. Show those shoes who's boss. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do.

    1. And it occurred to me that I could buy another pair of sandals for house use and have another pair of shoes in the closet :-)

  3. I found some shoes for you to wear. They get you further away from the ground so you'll be safer.

  4. We have indoor/outdoor shoes, too. Maybe your shoes will do a happy dance?

  5. Uh, probably time to see the doc, maybe an orthopedist? Linda in Kansas

    1. I will keep that option in my back pocket, but each day there's been such a big improvement I'm confident that things will take care of themselves.

  6. I'm assuming you got the ankle checked out after the fall and that's how you know it's sprained? You know, falls are the worst thing for us of a certain age...anyway I fell a couple of years ago and thought it was just a sprain and did all the RICE things, but when it didn't get better, went to see an orthopedist. We have a wonderful walk-in orthopedics here in town. I had a broken bone in my foot, and it only needed a walking boot, which I had in the closet from a bout of Achilles heel a number of years ago. Glad I saved the "boot" so I could go outdoors and keep walking.

    1. After the tumble I could put my complete weight on that foot and wiggle my ankle in all directions. As I told Linda, I will seek out specialized attention if things don't continue to improve.

    2. I had my teeth cleaned, easily walked out of the dentist's office where the tumble took place, and went grocery shopping. It was only as I was getting home from the errands that I realized I had a problem. Sure glad you got the walking boot, it will make a world of difference. Sometimes we just don't know how much damage we've done.

  7. I loved wearing Berkenstocks outside when I lived in Illinois. I love the idea of using them as house shoes. Hmmm...

    1. Today any shoe with a back rubbed the heel bruise.

  11. I've never kept a pair of shoes for just inside. I even make sure my slippers have a hard sole so they can go outside if needed! Hope your ankle is better soon!

    1. Having dedicated inside shoes is a new thing for me, mainly because the good arch support models the doctor recommended are so expensive I decided that not wearing them outside would greatly extend their life.

  12. I have broken my left foot FOUR times! I twisted it and was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and still could not bear weight after a week. The ligament tore and took a small chunk of bone in the side of my foot. Ihad the full treatment of a cast and no weight bearing for 6 weeks. the next three breaks were in the same place and I reckonized what it was right away. I have every manner of splints, boots and braces. I wear Dawgs all the time. Similar to what you pictured. They run about $35, but they have buy one get one ales all the time.

    1. I bought my first pair of fleece lined slippers last fall and loved them. When it got too hot for fleece I purchased the plastic ones.
