Just in time for prime eating season I took a quiz about peaches. I thought I knew a lot about the fruit, but it turns out I was far from an expert on them.
The things I learned:
- Mealy peaches were refrigerated before they were fully ripe.
- A deep blush is NOT a sign of a ripe peach. It's a fruit that has a creamy yellow background color.
- If a peach is still slightly green, it will ripen if you leave it at room temperature for a couple of days.
- Most peaches in the USA come from California (not Georgia, which is called the Peach State)
- Research has found that compounds in peaches inhibit the growth of breast cancer.
- Peach pits helped save the lives of soldiers during World War I. They used them to make activated charcoal for gas masks.
Good information.

DeleteI love fruit. I hate the fact that it has to be picked green before it's shipped, because I remember tree-ripened fruit from when I was a child and we bought from local orchards. These days a golden delicious apple is green; they eventually turn yellow, but the taste just isn't there. But you can't ship tree-ripened fruit; it would bruise easily and spoil before it arrived at its destination.
ReplyDeleteAt this time of year the grocery stores bring in produce from local growers so it's possible to get that 'ripe from the tree' taste.

ReplyDeletemy native village and nearing towns had numerous gardens of apricot ,plums ,loquat and guava ,i used to think apricot as peach for long but since some years i was corrected by hubby lol
I've never eaten a loquat, and the only quava I've had has been in prepared drinks. Both are available in my local Asian market, but quite expensive.
DeleteI hope a lot of peaches come from local fruit stands. There are a lot of orchards all over the country.
ReplyDeleteNot many fruit stands in my neighborhood, but the two big local chain restaurants are selling peaches from local farms.
