There's One In Every Crowd

The other day I noticed something strange sticking out from the pot of pansies on the front porch. Can you see it?

There's a tomato plant growing among the flowers!

I didn't put the seed there.  I suspect a bird or critter ate a fruit from one of my plants last year and 'deposited' the remains in the pot, where the seed overwintered.  Now that the days are getting longer and the weather's warming up it decided it was time to sprout.

For some reason, seeing the larger, completely different greenery in the pot reminded me of an old Sesame Street song that I haven't thought about  for decades.

Pansies are cool weather plants, so I'll be replacing them in the box just as soon as I can get to the garden center to pick out some blooms that like our hot, humid summer weather.  When I do, I'll transplant the tomato plant in the back garden plot...where it belongs.

  1. I totally identify with that tomato plant, Kathy! Just a reminder for us to bloom where we're planted - or transplanted, as might be the case.

  3. Oh this is just so fun. I love how you included the cookie monster vid too. I haven't had a tomato plant sprout up however friends tell me they've had pumpkins growing in their compost. Keep us posted as to the adventures of this usurper!

    1. My compost pile doesn't get as hot as it should and in the warm weather things start sprouting on a regular basis. I've been known to microwave pepper seeds to kill them before tossing them in.

  4. Gosh! I haven't heard that song in such a long, long time too. Funny thing is we've gotten our tomato plants the same way.

    1. Yes, go figure. (And I think that 'Basil Babies' sounds like a good name for a band.)
