It Was Lovely While It Lasted

Historically, the the average first freeze for the St. Louis area is October 31st. This year many outlying areas had the temperatures dip below 32°F shortly before that date, but the official weather station at the St. Louis Lambert International Airport remained above freezing.

And then the weather stayed warm. Up until a week ago we were having lovely weather--brisk overnight but warm during the day. On Thursday I turned the furnace on for the first time since March, but the lows were still above the magic 32° mark.  However, if the forecasters are correct tomorrow morning will be the first freeze of the year. It will also be the second latest first freeze in the city's history (the latest was on November 27, 2009)

Time to get out the heavy coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. I am not looking forward to it at all.

  1. Maybe it’s just a cold spell and soon you’ll be back to a warmer temperature. We get that here on and off through the winter. Some days are spring- the next week it’s cold. But it’s good to keep your winter clothes on hand. I packed my summer things but always keep a couple of shorts, and summer tops for those warmer winter days.
It’s cold here - and tomorrow it’s supposed to get down to 38. That’s freezing. Forecast says for next few days. BrrrrršŸ„¶

    1. Unfortunately, St. Louis usually has a solid three-month true winter.

  2. Bright and brisk is better than cold and wet, but comfortably warm is even better.

  7. No season is predictable anymore. I love Winter but it's long here: we switched the furnace on in early October. Sigh.

    1. Back in the 1980s I had quite a few Halloween sweatshirts and turtlenecks in my closet. Now those would be much too warm.

  8. Winter has reared its ugly head here. Low 20's for the next few days.

  9. We are in NJ for the holiday and the weather has been moderate in the 40-50s, but rain is coming in for Thanksgiving followed by colder temps. However, this forecast is better than where we live in NH. I already have out the scarves and gloves.

    1. In my book rain is always better than winter precipitation.

  10. I do not miss winter there! It gets cold and we have had snow that only stuck around for a day. Oddly enough the weather here is a lot like it was in Missouri. We just don't get quite as cold as you in the winter and more importantly (to me) is that it does not get as hot as you in the summer

    1. That does surprise me, given how far south you live.
