Good To Hear

A while back I went to see my primary care physician for my yearly appointment, during which I mentioned I was having some off and on tinnitus. The doctor recommended an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) practice in the office building of the hospital she was affiliated with, and suggested I make an appointment and have the issue checked out.

The information sat on my desk for a while, but when I finally got around to calling for an appointment I was surprised to learn that the practice had multiple offices, one of which was much closer to me than the hospital branch. That's where I made the appointment.

This afternoon I went in. There were two parts to the visit-a hearing exam and a consultation with the doctor.

During the first part I got to sit in a soundproof booth and respond to a series of tones and words. I got my results immediately, and was pleased to find out that except for a tiny bit of high frequency hearing loss my hearing was normal. I was escorted back to the lobby to wait for the doctor.

Five minutes later I was called back again, this time into an examination room. The doctor asked about my tinnitus symptoms and went over my hearing test again. He told me that unfortunately there wasn't a lot that could be done for my symptoms but since it was most annoying at bedtime I could try using a fan or a white noise machine to mask the noises in my ears.

  1. I'm glad to read your hearing is normal though bummed they can't help you with the noise the ears make at night. Will you give a white noise machine a go?

  3. Well, could have been worse. I have tinnitis, (SP???) and have learned to live with it. I was told that hearing aids would help and tried them, three years in fact, but it did not do much. I find that, yes, running a fan does help but for me, the cure is to be outdoors. Wind in the trees, small sounds of all kinds, and I just forget the buzzing.

    1. If there's any type of background noise I don't think about my ears.

  4. Sounds relieving, pun intended. Sorry about the tinnitus.

  5. My doctor also referred me to ENT for one ear tinnitus that began after I slipped when jumping a ditch a few years back and ended up slamming that side of my head face into opposite bank. I did try to go, but the clinic cancelled three times, once when I had already checked in, then in two subsequent tries, an hour before and two hours before. I gave up, believing they had no intention of ever seeing me. I'm glad you got in. My brother has it in both ears. I live with mine its gone on so long.

  6. Hope this clears up for you. You might look up on the web, exercises for tinnitus..this has helped my husband. We sleep with a loud fan every night...problem is, when we travel, it's difficult to pack the fan. I'm working on a solution for this.

  10. Also, go to YouTube and look up Ambient sounds. They have 8-12 hour long videos of just sounds but make sure your device is plugged in.
