There was a new-to-me fruit in our produce basket this week. It looked like an apple, but tasted like a pear. Appropriately enough, it was called a apple pear.
According to
wikipedia, Pyrus pyrifolia (colloquially known as apple pear due to its appearance and texture) is a pear species native to China, Japan, and Korea. The variety in our basket had skin the color of a Bartlett. When I took a bite it was perfectly ripe. And messy. The juice ran down my arm as I was eating it.

Hmmm. I think that would be a disappointment. Pears are marginally OK. It's the juice down the arm and the grainier than apples texture I don't like.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE a good pear. I love a good apple, too, though.
DeleteI'm familiar with these, they are also called Ya pears. There is also a crunchy brown variety, the name of which escapes me right now.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to look more carefully at the grocery stores around here. I bet they carry them, even though I've never noticed.
DeleteI love pears...and yours sounded sweet and juicy! I'll have to try these...I've seen them but never bought them! Someone gave us a huge box of pears this weekend. I am going to have to figure out some recipes to use them up...I'm sure they will all ripen together! Uh oh! haha.
ReplyDeleteI bet your extra pear 'using up' will turn into a blog post :-)
DeleteThose are my favorites!
ReplyDeleteWe really like those. We call it Korean Pears. However, they are really expensive.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the price is because of the difficulty in growing them or the distance they need to be shipped?
DeleteWe've had here for decades a fruit called Asian pear which tastes like a pear but has the crisp crunch of an apple. I occasionally buy them when I can get organic ones. I use pears in my juicing so just bought a bag of bartlett pears to use for that.
ReplyDeleteSince it's coming up on pear season I suspect those bartlett's will be especially tasty!
