So far I haven't had any luck, but this afternoon I had a chunk of free time and decided to go out to specifically hit up a few thrifts. However, for this trip getting ready to leave the house meant more than grabbing my purse and keys. In my area most used clothes stores no longer have dressing rooms, so unless I wanted to buy potential items and return the ones that didn't fit I had to dress so I could try things on in public.
For me that meant a pair of bike shorts and a sports bra topped with a coverup. I added a pair of slide-in sandals and I was ready to go.At each of the stores I gathered potential items, then found a quiet aisle next to a mirror. I looked around to make sure no one was watching, then either slid a pair of pants on over my shorts or quickly took off my top, put on a top or dress, and then evaluated the thing in the mirror. It felt strange, but a couple of people walked by and no one seemed to care.
For less than $12 I was able to find a couple of shirts, and one lightweight sweater, but I will have to continue to hunt (at one store or another) to find the rest of the items.

I hate it when there are no dressing rooms. I suppose the store is trying to cut down on theft, but still. I want to know that something fits before I buy it! The bike shorts and sports bra are good ideas. Hell, I'd strip down right there too. People wear a lot tinier things at the beach and no one thinks twice about that.
ReplyDeletePeople who wear tiny things to the beach either have a better body than mine (or a heck of a lot more confidence).
DeleteThat’s some pro-level thrift shopping strategy right there I love the bike shorts + sports bra hack thrifting ninja mode activated. And hey, scoring 3 pieces for under $12? That’s a serious win for sure
ReplyDeleteI will forever think of my outfit as "thrifting ninja mode activated'
DeleteI have tried things in store like that -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI’ve had to do that before.
ReplyDeleteNo dressing rooms? No sales!
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
You make a valid point. For years the St. Vincent de Paul stores still had dressing rooms (and that's who got all my business) but now they're roomless too.
DeleteThat was canny shopping.
ReplyDeletei pretty much only buy clothes from thrift shops too-I only have one near me now at the lake-but they do have a dressing room which is nice. glad you found a few items
ReplyDeleteI think smaller stores might tend to set their own rules, but there are none of them close to my house.
DeleteYes, they never re-opened Dressing Rooms after COVID and eventually tore them down in all the Stores around here too, so I do the same as you and nobody seems to pay attention or care, if they notice at all. Glad you found some Chazza Wardrobe, I always buy every piece of wardrobe secondhand now with very few exceptions, Retail not only costs too much, but I don't like many of he Fashions or Colors offered, so Pedestrian and Generic looking.
ReplyDeleteVery little of what's in my closet comes from retail outlets.
DeleteCostco, Bimart, no dressing rooms, then the return lines are incredibly long sometimes. I recently discovered Amazon Haul. Which seems like Temu on Amazon. Been getting clothes, blouses, for under $5. Shocked at the good quality. I tried to get some capri's but when they came (usually takes two weeks or more), too big. amazon instantly refunded the $ and informed me I didn't need to return the item. I'm trying to find a larger friend for them. If I had a sew machine I"d alter them, but I gave it up long ago. Amazon Haul is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThat's a new site to me. Thanks for sharing the information.
DeleteIt would sure make it easy even if they had a designated area behind a curtain to try on a couple of items. My youngest daughter rarely purchases and of her clothes from retail stores. She is small and for this reason, she can always find some of the cutest clothes. Great idea to dress in a minimum fashion so that you could try things on. Happy hunting on the items you need.
ReplyDeleteI love a good hunt!
DeleteWhat, no pictures of the bike shorts outfit?!
ReplyDeleteNot on me :-)
DeleteThat was a very smart way to do it.
