The first rule of advice during extremely hot weather is to minimize outside time. However, this afternoon a fellowship I belong to had an ice cream social scheduled. The pavilion and ice cream truck had been reserved, and advertising had started months ago. The show had to go on.

By the time Hubby Tony and I arrived to help set up, two large ceiling fans in the pavilion were already circulating the muggy air, and several floor fans placed along the pavilion's sides added additional breeze. In addition, someone showed up with washcloths in a bucket of ice water for people to wrap around the back of their neck.
As I expected, once the event started there was more socializing than exercising. People tended to sit or stand in the shade of the pavilion or nearby trees. I drank a lot of water, but the Italian ice from the truck also added another layer of refreshing hydration.The event was scheduled to end at 5:00, but people started leaving a half hour before that. There wasn't much to clean up, and Tony and I headed home. My sweaty clothes were sticking to my body and I couldn't wait to take a shower.

I don’t do well in extreme hot weather anymore and I definitely wouldn’t be exercising in it.

DeleteIce cream socials are so fun. We used to do a make your own ice cream sundae social! This heat has been unbearable this summer.I can just imagine how hot you were being outside. Our air conditioning went out ( we called to get the thermostat fixed) last night- thankfully we had storms it the outside temps dropped from 94 to 66 this morning.

DeleteUgh, humidity! That's the only thing that saves us here in central California--ours is a dry heat. When the humidity gets much beyond 16 percent, I melt. Thank God for air conditioning.
ReplyDeleteI've grown up with Midwest weather, so 'normal' heat and humidity are just annoyances for me. However the past few days have not been normal.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about above deletion. That was a helluva stretch that heat dome. Not a fan of Hot and Humid yet I live where that is the norm. Somethings wrong with me Kathy. But now that you've mentioned an Italian Ice I think I need one. :-)

DeleteIt's been about the same temperatures here lately. Ice cream sounds good but I don't like being outside in this heat.

DeleteAn ice cream social in that kind of heat is a brave move, but it sounds like everyone came prepared. It's great that the fans and the ice water washcloths made it a bit more bearable. You're right, when the weather is that hot, the priority is definitely socializing over any kind of physical activity. A successful event, even if it meant everyone went home feeling a bit sticky and sweaty. A cold shower must have felt amazing.

We have Heat Advisories daily now all Spring and Summer, every Year it seems to get even Hotter, to the point even the Cactus are dying from it. We're going to have 113 all Week they say, plus Humidity since it's Monsoon Season... ugh.

Hi there! I noticed your profile mentions Kirkwood is your home, I lived in Des Peres way back in the early 70s, also lived in the city proper and in U. City. Seven States I can call home at various stages of my life, our family's life ..... I used to play tennis in Webster Groves outdoors! What wonderful memories I have.

DeleteMy sister, many friends, former husband all there ... I visit at least once a year ~~ and yes it has changed!! Our home was in Harwood Hills 11933 Claychester. We had a pool, that no longer exists. The fun we had, oh the fun we had. Our kids were 14, 13, 12, 7.
