Dried Grapes

There is a 'day' for everything! Today it was raisin's turn

Cultures have been dehydrating grapes for centuries, but National Raisin Day has been celebrated since 1909. The event was promoted by growers of California, which produces all of the raisins in the United States.

The ironic thing is that just before I learned about Raisin Day I had gone to the pantry and grabbed a handful of them to snack on. I find that when I'm craving something sweet sometimes they will do the trick.

Sometimes.

  1. I always have a bag of raisins in my cupboard for use in baking muffins, loaves and cookies. I also eat them in morning oatmeal.

    1. I agree! I don't know anyone except for our household that buys them for eating.

  5. We live in the raisin capital of the world. Unfortunately, many grape vines have been removed the past couple of decades and replaced with pistachio and almond trees. Raisin production is very labor-intensive, and those vines need lots of water.

  6. And to come back and add one more tidbit--SunMaid Raisins are the gold standard for raisins. And, if you can get the organic ones, you are eating "high on the vine." My dad was had vineyard for awhile as he had worked for Welch's Grape Farm in Arkansas and trained as a master pruner. He always sold his raisins to SunMaid so I have a very long history with the company.

    1. I like grapes, too, but sometimes it's easier to grab something that doesn't have to be washed before eating.

  8. My son and I are the only ones in my family who like raisins. The good thing about that is that I can put raisins in my cookies and HeWho will not touch them!

  9. I have barely come around on raisins after 50 years but we are only doing baby steps right now. Like I can tolerate them in a cookie or something.
