Somebody's Got To Win. Right?

People in Missouri haven't been particularly inclined to receive a COVID vaccine shot. We're one of the 15 lowest states in the country for people who have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine, and we've made the national news for our soaring number of cases, so earlier in the week the state announced they would be sponsoring a 'vaccine incentive program' (AKA a COVID sweepstakes).

In total, the state will reward 900 individuals for receiving their shots. They're awarding prizes in three categories-adults who received the vaccine before July 21, those who received their shot after July 21, and young people between the ages of 12 and 17. The prizes are quite generous. Adults can win $10,000 cash. Teenagers $10,000 prizes will be in the form of an education savings account. Between mid-August and mid-October there are several rounds of drawings.

You have to opt into the program, so the day after the big announcement I filled out the form to enter on the website. Entries will be rolled over from one round to the next, so I will have multiple chances to add a little extra money to the household budget for the year.

  1. Hope you win! It is a shame though why people are not getting vaccinated.

    1. I can't understand why anyone wouldn't want to get vaccinated.

  3. Vaccines are said to make the disease milder, which is important of course. They do not prevent, however, the spreading of the virus. We are a good example" - a huge percentage of vaccinated people , yet we're facing a possible fourth lockdown. So far, we have fewer life threatening cases than in the previous waves, which is probably due to vaccination, but things are still unknown, still in the dark with the Delta variant.
In any case, vaccination has become the toy of the politicians.
They might get sued in the future, when things become more transparent.

  4. Such a shame. We've been reading about the antivaxxers.
Mind you, our local health unit here in Ontario has the highest number of vaxed citizens (87% 1st dose), despite out ridiculous member of parliament leading the anti-vax protests!

    1. I think pro-vaccination people in our area would be thrilled to have your area's numbers!

  5. California used a similar tactic but everyone who has been vaccinated was eligible. The state keeps a record of your vaccination so there was no opting in or out. I don't know if it got more people vaccinated. California has about a 57 percent rate, overall, but here in the San Joaquin Valley it is much lower, about 35 percent, for lots of reasons. So many conservatives live in the area. There are small towns where people don't have the access to medical care. Then there is the large number of immigrants who are fearful of coming out of the shadows for something like this. There are now organizations going into small communities, going door to door, speaking the languages of the people, and helping them get vaccinated. Hopefully our numbers will increase.

  6. It's all a big mess. Were you oreviously vaccinated? I thought the lottery was for newly vaccinated as an incentive, which is not fair to those who responsibly got vvaccinated already.

    1. No, there are separate drawings for people who were vaccinated before the contest was announced. You could win!

  7. Everyone in my Missouri family has signed up... Having fun thinking about what to do with the $10,000 not that I will win! LOL

    1. It is fun to think about what to do with a potential windfall, but I never win anything.

  8. I hope you win. I didn't win the one big prize the state shelled out, a million bucks to one person. Some student won it. I don't think they really had a way to know who got vaccinations however or their phone numbers, to notify if they won. I bet internally it was a big huge mess so they just chose someone.

  9. Hopefully, it will make more people to get vaccinated. In Toronto, we don't have any such option. But, I got both vaccines. Heard stories of people shouting and protesting in front of vaccine clinics. Why people think that they have the right to prevent others from getting vaccinated? If they have the right to not vaccinated, others has the right to get vaccinated too.

  11. I didn't know about this until a couple of days ago when my daughter told me about it. Cliff said not to bother to add him because he never wins anything. I told him that's because he never puts his name in the hat, and that I'd enter him and take his money if he won (I wasn't serious about that, of course).
