It Was Time

For the first time in more than 21 years our house doesn't have any animals. Today Jackson the Cat crossed the Rainbow Bridge

The average cat lives for 12-14 years. Jackson was 21, so he certainly had a long life. However, for the past month his advanced age was really starting to show. It was becoming harder for him to get around and get comfortable when he laid down. Yesterday he stopped eating (although I saw him drinking water several times) and his right leg stuck out at an unnatural angle when he walked.

Hubby Tony called the vet and made an appointment to take him in this afternoon. Today we made sure that Jackson knew he was loved. He got as much extra attention as he wanted, and got to sleep when he had enough 'peopling'. When it was time to leave for the vet Jackson perked up and actually made a stink about going into his carrier. On the drive to the vet's office I opened the car sun roof so the fresh air could come in.

The vet and technicians were professional and compassionate, but it was a tough time. After the we left the office Tony and I went to a nearby park and walked around. Back at home, it was very strange to not have our orange and white friend greet us.

In better days....

  1. I'm so sorry for your loss - Jackson was a beautiful cat.
That is the truly hard part of owning animals. Our cat and dog are 10 years old. I dread the day. I've never been without a animal to dote on. Well we did go about a month and we were miserable. I went out and picked out a kitten to bring home. 6 months later we got a dog. They do tie us down, but the companionship and comedy relief they provide is priceless.

    1. I've said for a couple of years that because of our travels to see the kids and grandkids it would be easier if we didn't have a cat (because we have to find sitters, etc). However, now that the day has come it will be interesting to see what happens.

  5. My condolences. It's so hard to lose a beloved family pet. But I'm sure Jackson had the most wonderful life that any cat could have, thanks to you. Plus you gave him the final gift of not having to suffer unnecessarily.

  8. I think it's harder losing a pet than a people. Be free Jackson.

  9. Arrrggghhh! It is so tough to lose an animal member of the family. We have had to part with so many in our lives and we swore we'd never get another after the last one. Then, six months later, we found he wasn't "the last one" and Sweetie-Pie came to live with us. My sincere condolences on the loss of your Jackson, Kathy.

  14. It is hard to lose a close pet. We lost the only cat we ever had a few years ago. I was very surprised at how much it affected me when he died.

  15. So sorry for your loss. He certainly led a charmed life and was much loved. As hard as it is to make that appointment, it is an act of love. It is okay to be sad.

  17. Well now you have donations for your nearby animal shelter (assuming some of Jackson's stuff is still usable, maybe unopened cat food?) I'm just trying to suggest a bright side to your down side. It's been many years since our family dog passed. Pets do bring joy. All the best for Jackson's family.

    1. Thank you. We had just stocked up at our local independent pet store, and they were nice enough to take it back (along with a 40-pound box of litter). However, I've gathered a large pile of cat stuff that will have to go somewhere.
