Brown did not seem to be a very popular color this year. After stopping in several big box shoe stores with no success I paid a visit to a comfort shoe store that recently opened near me. I walked in and explained the situation, and the clerk jokingly exclaimed it was a shame I couldn't just stick with tennis shoes. She brought out several styles for me to try on, but nothing was just right. A store at the mall had a pair that fit perfectly...and cost $150, way more than I wanted to spend.
Finally I exhausted my options, and decided I would make do until warmer weather let me pull out my summer shoes. If I happened to be in a store that sold shoes I would glance down the aisles, but didn't expect to find anything. Two weeks ago we were running errands when Hubby Tony announced he needed new shoes. I went with him into the store, and was slightly depressed when he found a pair after ten minutes of looking.
A couple of days later I got a coupon in the mail for that very same shoe store. I told Tony, and we agreed it was a shame he couldn't have saved a little money on his purchase. The next time my errands took me towards that store I stopped in, with no expectation that I would have any luck.

At the cash register I learned that not only were the shoes 20 percent off, I could use my mail coupon ($10) and another $10 coupon I had cached in my account. According to the receipt I had saved almost as much as I paid for the shoes.
I've worn the shoes enough now to know they are as comfortable as my original assessment thought they'd be. They look like they're made out of sturdy leather, so I hope I get many years of wear out of them before I have to start the shoe shopping process again.

DeleteMerrell shoes are fantastic. My own personal rule about this, if I find shoes that work for me, are comfortable, and reasonably priced, I will buy two pairs and put the other one away for later.
ReplyDeleteI learned that lesson the hard way when my wonderful Skechers running shoes stopped being made. I bought them for less than $40 on Oahu in 2010, and they have done a lot of work since then. Many, many kilometers of running and walking, without one single blister.
Lucky for me my Mother had bought an identical pair - though less gorgeously coloured as mine were hot pink and she got grey - and she did not like them so they sat in her cupboard for nearly 7 years, until I mentioned mine were starting to wear through in the toe area. She gave me hers and I have covered hundreds of kilometers in them already. I can still wear the pink ones. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own.
I saw them for sale here in Australia for $160 a pair and kicked myself then for not buying more pairs in Hawaii. Now I am kicking myself for not paying the $160 because the amount of use I got out of them and how comfortable they are, it would have been worth it.
If you have feet that are hard to fit, then I think my rule might apply x600. :) AKA go back and get another pair! Mine are ladies size 10-11 most of the time which is one big reason for the rule, it is quite hard to find good shoes in that size.
Snoskred, I've purchased duplicate pairs of shoes before, but these particular ones I'll only wear in the winter, and I hope it will be years before I have to replace them. It wasn't worth it to me to take up valuable storage space. I hope I don't regret my decision down the line.

DeleteGlad you found some shoes. I love shoes I guess "fortunately" I can't wear any ole shoe. I have a bunion to shop around. Finding sandals is a pain.

DeleteMerrell shoes are comfortable, usually very expensive, too. You were fortunate to find such a good deal. I've had a pair of Merrells for 15 years.
ReplyDeleteFifteen years! That IS quality. I think the shoes I replaced were about ten years old, which I thought was pretty good.
DeleteI think Merrell's are supposed to be a good brand. I have the same problem, finding shoes my size. I tend to wear the same pair for three to four years until they are in shreds, while I try to find something that fits. Granted summers give relief when I just wear sandals. Those are nice looking shoes!
