Answer And Explanation

Hubby Tony and I walk most every day. For some reason, today that familiar exercise made the top of my left foot hurt. The sandals I was wearing, which are always comfortable, felt too tight across the top of my foot. I stopped mid-walk to loosen the strap, which helped a little bit, but by the end I was limping.

As one does in this internet age I came home and asked Dr. Google what the problem might be. She gave me several common causes to my query "top of foot pain when walking", along with a simple description of each.

The one that most closely matched my symptoms was Extensor Tendinitis, which I learned could affect the tendons on the top of your feet or the back of your hands. Symptoms of the condition included pain (along a tendon or an area around it) that got worse with use, stiffness, swelling, and discoloration around a tendon. When I took a good look at the top of my foot I was surprised to see it was puffy, and there was a bruise in the sore area. No wonder I was having issues!

There were several possible causes. The first was shoes that were too tight, or shoelaces tied too tightly. Aha! I found the issue!

Figuring that a first step would be to try to alleviate the problem myself. The treatment section called for rest (by avoiding or reducing the activity that caused the issue), removing direct pressure from the top of my feet from my footwear, elevating and icing the area with a cold pack, and using an over-the counter NSAID, I took that to mean that tonight I had permission to sit on the couch with the footrest raised and a gel ice pad on the sore area. Things already feel better.

    1. The TV was on for background noise (Hubby was watching a baseball game), but I wrote out this post then fiddled on my computer.

    1. I think maybe it does, but I haven't done more than walk downstairs to empty the trash.

  4. I'm glad that you are feeling better. I stopped using Dr. Google more than a decade ago when everything I put it came back as dire. I could type in yellow toe nail and Dr. Google would diagnose me with yellow toe nail cancer that only has a .05 percent chance of a cure and that I'd likely die overnight. I decided the best way to use it was to research conditions that my actual doctor told me I had. I would caution about doing that too. It's good to see that the Dr. has gotten better over time.

    1. I do take everything Dr. Google says with a grain of salt, and verify the information on a website I trust.

  5. oh i am sorry dear friend Kathy for your walk was disturbed with foot top pain !
i was was little surprise to know that you wear sandals for regular walks
me and hubby wear only soft shoes for long walks ,in Islamabad we walk in two to four miles in those shoes and they are so light that our feet feel cozy throughout the walk
so nice you feeling better now !!!

    1. I have several pairs of 'comfort' sandals that are great for walking on inside and outside on hard surfaces like sidewalks.

  6. I hope your foot is feeling much better now. Feet are very forgiving, but sometimes they complain.

  7. Ouch! Finding a mysterious bruise and swelling after a regular walk is no fun at all, but I’m glad you solved the mystery so fast.
Foot tendons take forever to calm down if you push them, so take that "couch with the footrest up" prescription very seriously tonight! Glad the ice is already bringing some relief—feel better soon, Kathy!

    1. I've already found out that a half hour of icing didn't make the issue go away! I make a horrible patient and see another night of sitting around in my future.

  8. The only time I go online for medical information is when I have a diagnosis or test results from the doctor and I want more information about the how's and wherefores. I sometimes will google drug information, but even that I am very cautious with because I have no idea who wrote it. My trust of online information is very tiny.

    1. I am somewhat the other way (can you tell?) and am comfortable gathering initial information then going to a trusted website, like the CDC, NIH, or Mayo Clinic for verification.

  10. I’m glad you figured out what might be causing the pain and that the ice and elevation are helping! Hopefully a little rest will have you back to your daily walks soon

    1. Thanks. Slow and steady (with plenty of time to rest) seems to be doing the trick.
