The first stop was a warehouse club, where Tony grabbed a chicken pot pie from the prepared food section and bags of salad from the refrigerated area. The temperature outside was warm enough that we stopped by the house to drop off the perishable things before heading out again, this time to a local chain grocery store. I pushed the cart and Tony took charge. Ten minutes later the cart held a selection of drinks, sweet and savory snack foods, dinner rolls, and dessert.
One of us is normally at the grocery store every few days, which means there are just a couple of items and we use the self-serve checkout. Today's larger purchase required the use of a cashier. Tony took charge of putting everything on the conveyor belt, then handed off the bags to the bagger. The cashier had scanned a third of the items when he stopped, explaining that the computer had flagged one of them as expired. It wouldn't let him sell the item, so he had to find and remove it. The item turned out to be the dinner rolls, which should have been pulled from the shelf three days ago. There was no indication of mold, but also no way to know how stale the rolls would have been.
I wonder what would have happened if Tony had scanned his own purchases?

That's amazing the scanner caught the expired food -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI thought so too.
DeleteI agree that's amazing
ReplyDeleteMy only question is this -- what kind of self-respecting poker players eat SALAD?
ReplyDeleteHA!
DeleteI've never asked, but if it was me after eating chips, candy, and other crap I would need a palate cleanser of real food before dessert at the end of the night.
That is funny! I never thought of that.
DeleteYou are way ahead!!
ReplyDeleteMay the scanner catch the broken ones!!
I hope you have a great time playing poker!!
Have a nice weekend Kathy!!
This poker group has been going on for decades. The men do the playing; the women gather at a separate place for dinner and conversation.
DeleteSo happy to hear you are feeling better and can be up and out. One of the Ladies Who Lunch now has pneumonia and won't be joining us on Monday.
DeleteSo, if the scanner knew an item was expired, why couldn't it just tell which one it was. "Hey, guess what! Something is expired. I hope you can find it!"
ReplyDeleteIn their defense, both the cashier and bagger looked like this was a retirement job for them. They were trained just enough to be functional, but not experts at the job.
DeleteThat's a sophisticated scanner, or have they been like that for years and I never knew?
ReplyDeleteGood question, and one I also asked myself.
DeleteThat would be something then sent to Gleaners here by the many participating grocery stores. Wow, that code and scanner can tag if its past present date. Impressive!
ReplyDeleteUsually they move things close to the expiration date to the clearance section. Not sure what happens if it doesn't sell there.
DeleteSounds like a typical shopping trip with a mix of convenience and surprises! It's always interesting when things don't go quite as planned, like the dinner rolls being flagged as expired, even when they seem perfectly fine. It’s nice that the system caught it though. Definitely makes you think about how technology is changing even the simplest tasks, like scanning groceries. I’m curious to know what would’ve happened if Tony scanned it himself—would he have caught it?
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having a great weekend. You are invited to read my new post: https://www.melodyjacob.com/2025/03/the-breathtaking-adventures-we-had-in-glencoe.html Thank you.
I have never heard of this before-a good thing especially for fresh items
ReplyDeleteI know!
DeleteI doubt we have anything like that but it's good that expired things can't be sold.
ReplyDeleteI never knew an expired item could be detected. I always use self checkout & always check best by dates since some stores miss them.
ReplyDeleteI almost always check the date on a perishable item, and don't know why I forgot this time.
DeleteThat's interesting. Good to know they're set up like that.
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting. I didn't know they could flag expired items.
ReplyDeleteNice that the scanner caught that! I think all grocery store scanners should do that!
ReplyDeleteThat's a neat feature for the scanning machine. As for the bread, those ingredients used in store-bought breads often come with "stuff" to make sure the bread doesn't get mouldy.
