For the fourth day of the challenge I was invited to pay 10 cents for each pair or shoes or boots I own. This December I'm participating in An Advent of Gratitude to help remind me of the gifts I already have, what I often take for granted, and what I can and should be grateful for.
Back when I worked in an office I used to have more shoes. However, my career and lifestyle have changed, and as the footwear wore out it wasn't replaced. Right now I have one pair of dressy sandals and one pair of 'sensible' black dress shoes. Everything else is casual.
In the summer my choice of footwear is flip flops around the house and tennis shoes or sandals when I leave. During the winter my house shoes are an old repurposed pair of tennies. When I go to the gym or if I'm wearing jeans I use athletic shoes whenever possible. If it's really cold our, or if the occasion requires it I have brown and black loafers and booties. In addition, I also have a pair of shoes dedicated specifically to yard work and a pair of snow boots in the coat closet.
When I was getting dressed this morning I counted the shoes in the closet, the out of season pairs stashed in a box under the bed, then remembered to include the boots. The total was 20 pairs, which added two dollars to my donation total.
Five years ago today: Don't Waste Any Of Your Seconds
This is a sad commentary on old age and disability. Because my right shoe then must be fitted with a special lift, I tend to buy few shoes. Unlike working days, when I had an embarrassing number, I now have two pair, one summer sneakers and one winter. Twenty cents. New total, $10.70. But, I know my day is coming.
ReplyDeleteOh, but only one pair of shoes to choose from, it would be SO easy to get dressed in the morning.
DeleteYes. My winter pair is grey suede!
DeleteYou've reminded me of one of the houses I visited on a recent Homes for the Holidays tour. The woman's closet was the equivalent of a shoe store. No, a shoe store's backroom. She must have had hundreds of pairs of shoes, most of them heels.
ReplyDeleteWow. I've never seen anything like that.
DeleteReason for donating some of mine I'm thinking, I have no idea what I have.
ReplyDeleteI didn't either until I counted :-)
DeleteI have two closets with shoes stacked in their boxes. Today, as I decided what to wear to give a tour at the historical house where I volunteer as docent, I had three immediate shoe choices. Took me awhile to decide which shoe with which socks would do. Sometimes having fewer choices can make life easier. I'm not about to attempt this count but would just throw $10 in the pot and call it even!
ReplyDeleteEven though I have fewer choices I still sometimes have a problem figuring out what goes with what. Especially when I have to look professional.
DeleteWow to St. Louis temps. We were at 72 yesterday which felt so hot and muggy because it rained. Today starts with the high for the day at 65 and by 9pm it will have dropped 20 degrees and we remain in the 40s for the rest of the week. That's cold cold for my area. But the 72 yesterday was just wrong! Oh and the weird thing, it was cold in here yesterday and I warmed it up with the fireplace.
ReplyDeleteI don't enjoy any type of big temperature fluctuations. Makes it too hard to plan.
