The other day I was moving around the potted plants that summer on the deck. The large container of ginger sits on plastic feet, which raise it about a half inch off the ground. When I picked up the pot this guy was underneath:
The frog looked at me. I looked at him, then I pulled out my camera. He posed nicely while I took his portrait. The photo is deceptive; this little guy was only about an inch long. I went on about my moving plants business and the next time I looked he was gone.
After I finished my work I came inside and posted the photo on Facebook. One of my friends made a comment that if she had seen the frog she would have "freaked and dropped the pot, because (even though she doesn't mind snakes, spiders or bugs ) she was petrified of frogs". I'd never heard of frog phobia, but I know there's a name for everything. It only took a couple of seconds for Google to tell me that a fear of frogs and toads is ranidaphobia.
Now we all know.
I am with your friend Kathy, you are beyond calm.
ReplyDeleteAll the years of raising boys taught me a lot about being around 'critters' :-)
DeleteI think it's a Toad, Cathy, like Mr. Toad of Toad Hall.
ReplyDeleteHmmm....il have to research how you figure out the difference between the two.
DeleteOh, I thought he was a really big toad. We would have some that were huge that would sit in the cat's water during our hot summers. Haven't seen any for years, though. Too many people around us use pesticides which kill the toads.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a very tolerant cat.
DeleteOne of those somehow got into our house... down the hall... into the bathroom... and into the shower. When I started the shower he jumped right onto the middle of my back! Hubby removed him to the outside where he belonged! ... I was awake for a while after that...
ReplyDeleteWow! I would have been freaked out after that experience, too.
DeleteI love frogs! My oldest grandson (27) has that phobia. He screams like a girl and runs from them. Pretty funny, except that he really is scared.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for anyone who has a true fear of anything.
Deletewell, I wouldn't want a frog to jump at me, but I'm not fearful. Very cute! We have had a cricket in our garage for going on two weeks now; it will be sad when he leaves (or dies), but we are thankful he hasn't come inside. ;)
ReplyDeleteYears ago Oldest Son had a pet gecko, who had to be fed crickets. He had a separate container for the insects, which he bought by the dozen. Even though he was careful once in a while a cricket would escape. For the most part the escapees stayed in his bedroom, though.
DeleteGreat that you were able to get him to stay long enough to take his portrait. It's snakes for me. yuck, yuck, yuck!
