The Calendar Says Fall, But The Thermometer Disagrees

October is more than a quarter of the way over. At this time of year, the highs in the St. Louis area are supposed to be somewhere between 68-72°F. Instead, today the high temperature might blow past the record of 89°F (which was set in 1938).

Yesterday I was at Aldi and noticed they had bagged peaches on sale. I thought that was kind of weird, because I associate peaches with summer, but the price was right and a bag came home with me. This morning I added one of them to my lunch bag. When I ate it hours later I realized that a peach was the perfect fruit for the summer-like day.

  1. Our weather is on track here in Toronto. October is beautiful with leaves changing but November is usually very cold, brr

  2. It's going to calm down here soon. Hurricane rachel is heading this way and the temps are supposed to drop on Sunday.

  3. Wow. I can't imagine since we are expecting snow tonight in northwestern Canada.

  4. I didn't eat a single fresh peach this summer. A terrible oversight on my part. I did, however, eat some canned peaches with cottage cheese. I'm sure you're thrilled to hear that.

    1. Canned fruit with cottage cheese was one of the staple foods of my childhood. Somehow I've gotten away from it.

  5. Excellent on the peaches. It's funny that so many do think of them as summer stone fruits. However when I had peach trees, they were ripe in the autumn.

  7. Today the temp was about ten degrees colder than yesterday with rain. We're in the 60's next few days but may get into 70's later in week. Once the 70's vanish we usually don't see them again until spring. But these days, you never know. That's way too hot for this time of year. Fresh peaches here long gone.

  9. Did you check the origin of those peaches? Are peaches grown in your area? They may have been in cold storage for awhile. We are in the heart of peach growing here in California and those fresh peaches are long gone. I am seeing fruit from Peru coming in. I pass on those.

    1. The packaging said the fruit was distributed by a HMC Farms, company in Kingsburg. When I researched where that was I found out it was right around the corner from you!

    2. It is! Kingsburg is about a 20 minute drive from our house. And there are some fabulous orchards there. These must have been kept in cold storage and shipped recently. I'm not seeing fresh peaches in the markets here, but there are still plums.

    3. Cold storage or not, the peaches have been fantastic. I may go buy another bag before the sale is over on Tuesday.

  13. Beautiful! Fresh peaches are delicious! Autumn has begun here in Montreal, and I am so grateful! After our extremely hot and humid summer with the wildfires and horrible air quality, it is such a welcome and refreshing change.
Please stay safe and well hydrated.

    1. The forecasters are saying that we have to get through today and tomorrow, then nice cool fall air will arrive. I can't wait!

  14. Crazy weather, but sounds pleasant though - if you're not in a hot kitchen! Yummy peaches.
