Dentile

Rawpixel

This afternoon I am having oral surgery, which is an unattractive New Thing for me but strongly suggested by my dentist.

When I called to make the appointment with the oral surgeon the receptionist asked if I wanted to do the procedure with or without sedation. I chose the first option. That means I need to fast from food and drink after breakfast.

Hubby Tony will drive me to the oral surgeon's office, read his book while I'm having the procedure done, then drive me home afterwards. This oral surgeon is the only one in our insurance plan, and I have done the same thing for him. I know that in addition to prescriptions and instructions I will go home with a cup of Ted Drewes frozen custard.

My friend Google told me that most people resume their normal routine in 3-5 days after the procedure. Not knowing where I would fall in that time frame I have made several sets of contingency plans. There are plenty of soft foods in the kitchen, and Tony will pick up anything I didn't. I can use a jaw wrap with refreezable packs that Tony received for a similar procedure several years ago for swelling. There are books if I feel like reading, and TV if I just want to chill out.

I am ready....bring it on!

  3. Having had 3 trips to the oral surgeon recently, I suggest the sedation. I know they numb everything and you won't feel pain, but it is the sounds that make me cringe! My oral surgeon has some really nice ice packs that are complimentary, but I would have really enjoyed something to eat!

    1. I agree with you about the sounds; even a regular dentist appointment is an issue for me.

  4. I have more oral surgery coming up. Last time awhile back I had 5 teeth pulled. Went with the pill taken at home. Worked well. Glad you've got your plan in place. wishing you a smooth recovery time.

  5. I hope you have a smooth recovery, but if you're hurting or frustrated, just imagine what this would have been like 100 years ago.

    1. Isn't that the truth?! Thanks for the perspective.

  6. One of my best friends, 3 weeks ago had a visit to the oral surgeon to have 12 teeth pulled then fitted for dentures. Now that was extreme but apparently that is normal procedure. The first two weeks she was in pain but slowly she is recovering. I had oral surgery before I had my braces as a kid on my wisdom teeth. They put me out, but don't remember much pain.
I'm sure it will go well. I go in Monday to have a filling replaced.

    1. 12 teeth at one time! Seems barbaric!

    2. I agree that a dozen teeth sounds extreme. I am lucky that I have one side of my mouth I can chew on don't have to be as diligent about a liquid diet. Independent of the surgery I will go back to the dentist to have a very old crown replaced.

  7. An extraction? But you sound well-prepared. Hope you're not in too much pain.

    1. I woke up with little pain and wondered if I should continue the medications the dentist provided. I soon realized that would be a good idea :-)

  8. Good luck with the surgery this afternoon, and good for you for opting for the sedation to keep things as stress-free as possible! You have absolutely nailed the prep work here, from the jaw wraps and soft foods to having Tony on driver and reading duty. Getting a cup of Ted Drewes frozen custard as a post-op treat is a massive bonus that will definitely make the recovery process a whole lot sweeter. Rest up, enjoy your chilled-out TV time over the next few days, and let that custard work its magic.

    1. When Tony had his first experience with the oral surgeon several years ago I was a little jealous that he got a cup of custard. Evidently it's standard procedure for all patients.

  9. Eghads! This sounds like something from another era! 3-5 days for recovery! I have had a few oral surgeon procedures--wisdom teeth removed when in college, a few root canals, and one extraction, 31 years ago, for a bridge that is still doing just fine today. A day for that extraction as well as the wisdom teeth and I was just fine the next day. The root canals were done usually after work and I was back to work the next. Maybe it's age? Takes longer now for our bodies to bounce back? I keep thinking, though, that medical stuff is getting easier and quicker.

    1. I think I will be on the lower side of the recovery range, but my goals to run several sedate errands with Tony today definitely wasn't a good idea.

  10. I had a molar pulled last week. They gave me afterwards an ice pack the size of a half dollar that melted immediately in my hand, and whisked me out the back door the moment the last root was out. I had no problems afterwards at all. Did not even need Aleve.

    1. The more minimal dental work I've had done in the past doesn't cause any issues for me, and so far this one hasn't been too bad either. Today the whole jaw on the left side of my mouth feels like someone punched it.

  11. Hey Kathy, forgot to tell you that one of the things I ate when s teeth out was white bean ice cream that I'd made with I wanna say, but can't recall for sure, either mango or 🍓 strawberry. And I'm pretty sure I also did peanut butter and banana as well. Popped into my head, wanted to share.

    1. Those combinations sound wonderful! For some reason cold things are really bothering me today, so I would definitely save that ice cream for later.

    2. I get that. I recently had work done and now cold gets to me. I believe I also had hummus but I can't totally recall. I know I set myself up with soft foods.

I am glad your surgery is done smoothly by the grace of God🙏
You both husband and wife are truly blessed soul mates and care each other with deep love 🥹♥️
There is nothing more special than having caring life partner!
I had got my left molar filled around six to seven years ago and it’s still fine 🙏
I love how you made plans to fill this slow time of rest with positive and enjoyable things 😊 this is true blessing?
    Sending love and prayers ♥️🙏

  13. My son had a few wisdom teeth removed early in the year and recovered pretty quickly. Wishing you a speedy recovery as well. I was his Tony. Sat in the waiting room with my book.

    1. Years ago when Tony had a tooth removed I was able to leave the office and walk around the area. This time the requirement to stay in the office was written into the instructions.

  15. I am late in reading this post and hope that the dental surgery went well as did the recovery. Your contingency plans sounded great.

  16. Delighted by a report of all went well. I have had three extractions followed by implants, followed by crown. It hurts the pocket book, but as a happily down a steak, money seems well spent.
