A Poem For Earth Day

Picryl

“The Way Through the Woods”
 Rudyard Kipling

They shut the road through the woods
Seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
And now you would never know
There was once a road through the woods
Before they planted the trees.
It is underneath the coppice and heath
And the thin anemones.
Only the keeper sees
That, where the ring-dove broods,
And the badgers roll at ease,
There was once a road through the woods.

Yet, if you enter the wood
Of a summer evening late,
When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools
Where the otter whistles his mate,
(They fear not men in the woods,
Because they see so few.)
You will hear the beat of a horse's feet,
And the swish of a skirt in the dew,
Steadily cantering through
The misty solitudes,
As though they perfectly knew
The old lost road through the woods...
But there is no road through the woods.

  1. These days, not only is there no road, but no old woods left!

  2. We have a few of these old (no roads) at the farm. Tracks that were once used many years ago and now, the only way to travel them is with an ATV or by walking through the woods. What I love though, is that the ruts are still there and you can see where the roads once where. Beautiful post..

  3. Thanks dear Kathy for such a beautiful poem!
I really enjoyed it’s imagery and felt nostalgic for the path through the gardens we would cross to reach my very first school in next village 🥹
When I visited my village after few years, the area particularly the gardens were thinned and I see no more trees there ,only fields

    1. It's sad to see natural things removed in the name of 'progress'

  4. Up here in my part of California it doesn't take long to find roads less traveled and many of us, want to keep it that way! Lovely poem.

  6. I worry about the loss of the woods, with so much new construction everywhere, the animals are being left without much room to live.

  7. What a perfect choice for Earth Day. Kipling’s 'The Way Through the Woods' is such a hauntingly beautiful reminder that nature has a way of undoing our handiwork whenever we look away. It’s a great perspective to hold, especially when the world feels a bit too man-made and loud. Thanks for sharing the greenery today
