I Got Out Just In Time

For the past week the various forms we need to do our taxes have been showing in the mailbox.  However, the one from my mall Customer Service Desk job wasn't one of them.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, W-2 forms have to be mailed out by no later than January 31.  It wasn't here after Monday's delivery, so yesterday morning I sent an email to the Desk boss asking if he'd received his.

I got a quick response.  First he started off by saying the tax forms had been sent and I should be receiving it any day.  (It did show up that afternoon.)  He went on to tell me that the company that owns the mall had closed about a dozen Customer Service desks throughout the country.  The one I worked at was one of them!  If I'd not given notice back in October I would be out of job now.

Next time I go to that mall it will be strange to walk past the dark desk area.  I wonder if I'll ever see any of my co-workers again.

  1. Sounds like you made the right decision! It feels better to leave on your own terms than to be told you have to leave!

    1. Yes it does, especially when you consider I got laid off from the job BEFORE the Customer Service desk.

  2. Glad you beat them to it; it's more satisfying that way. I hope your co-workers weren't caught off guard, were given some reasonable warning.

    1. I hope everyone had some warning, too The Boss was the only one who worked full-time, but I know a couple of the other employees really relied on their paycheck from there.

  3. I'm guessing they kept the customer service desk until after Christmas as I seem to remember you visiting the mall during the holidays? I was always amazed when you wrote about your job at the customer service desk as I knew of no such places in any of the malls we frequent (which isn't very often) here in California. I figured it must be a midwest thing. Decades ago, when one of our malls in Fresno was new, it had such a desk but it only lasted until the first big remodel of the mall. Glad you left on your own terms.

    1. I think your guess is probably right. In 2013 we sold a ton of gift cards, and I bet they wanted to make sure they could take advantage of that again.

  4. It does sound like you got out just in time!

I worked at a job once and they were almost a month late in getting my W-2 out in the mail. I had to keep hounding my boss about it because he didn't seem to have any interest in getting it ready.
