Information I Hope I Never Need

Today I got a note from my boss reminding me it was time for a yearly reading of the mall's Emergency Procdures Guide. It's not a task I particularly enjoy; I understand the importantance of knowing what to do in case of an emergency, but I also think it's a little depressing to think about all the bad things that could happen.

I follow the rules, though, so this afternoon in between fielding Customer Service Desk questions and phone calls I read through the manual. It lays out-in alphabetical order-what steps to take for any conceivable issue: bomb threat, chemical emergency, civil disturbance, explosion, fire/fire alarm, firearm assault/active shooter, mall evacuation, medical emergency, natural disaster, and severe weather. The manual is gerneic for all the company's malls (so I was able to skim through the sections on floods and wildfires) but I paid close attention to the rest.

After I read through the guide I put it back in the drawer for the next person to look at. Hopefully I'm done with it until next year.

    1. I think every big business has plans in place for emergencies; some are more publicized than others.

  3. Oh, that is so true...so many violent things happening in malls across the country lately! Hopefully your knowledge will never have to be put to the test. Do you tend to stay calm in emergency situations? You seem like you would. :)

    1. Thanks for the vote of confidence :-) I've never really been tested in big emergencies..in a little one I'm good until its over, then fall apart.

  4. It's all about being prepared. Although I always wonder if I'd remember everything in case of emergency or if I'd run around like a crazy person. I'd like to think I could be cool under pressure.
