Easing Into It

I've been surprised, and pleasantly pleased, that the mall hasn't started playing non-stop Christmas tunes. Instead, they've been sprinkling them into the regular music mix, getting us ready for the holiday music blitz.

Last week it was about a quarter holiday songs, but today it was more like half and half.  An example--mid-morning the speakers delivered this set that had almost had me dancing behind the Customer Service desk: "Let's Groove Tonight" (Earth, Wind, and Fire), "Let's Stay Together" (Al Green), "Freeway of Love" (Aretha Franklin), "Where is the Love?" (Roberta Flack/Donnie Hathaway), and "Red, Red Wine" (UB40). These were followed by a big band version of "Frosty The Snowman", a pop-y version of "Little Drummer Boy" (singer unknown), "I'll Be Home For Christmas" (Bing Crosby), and a classical arrangement of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear".

All day it went back and forth. Sometimes the crowd noises, or someone coming up to ask me a question, drowned out the ambient music, but I could hear most of it. I know that eventually it'll switch over to nothing but holiday tunes, but this is a good way to ease into it.

    1. I liked what I heard, too, but I work about 20 hours a week. A steady diet of Christmas tunes gets old quick!

  2. I did a few mall shows back in the day. Actually, the twelve hour day, four days in a row.. Even now the thought of twelve hours of Rocking around the Christmas Tree, or whatever it is, makes me faint.

Enjoy you holidays, however; ignore my scrooginess.

  3. I'll probably start listening to Christmas music on purpose next week ;-) Love all those you mentioned.

    1. I have a box of CDs in the closet with the Christmas decorations. Last year I took it out, but for some reason (?!) never bothered to play any of them

  4. I've been pleasantly surprised our local Walmart hasn't been playing Christmas music non-stop. I think they are where all the Christmas decorations are at, but it's low enough that you don't hear it in other parts of the store. I'm sure that'll change after Thanksgiving though!

  5. I don't mind the free for all. I just appreciate it if they wait until after Thanksgiving. Come Friday morning I can embrace all Christmas, all the time :)

    1. If I was in charge the Christmas season wouldn't start after we cleaned up the Thanksgiving meal. However, no one asked me.

  6. Thanksgiving is so late this year that I must say I'm getting ready to hear some Christmas music in stores. But once I've heard the same songs over and over - as you must do at the mall - I will wish we were still in the music transition period!

    1. Lucky you, being in stores without Christmas music! Each of the two previous holiday seasons I've worked at the desk there's been one song I never got tired of hearing. We'll see if there's one this year, too.
