Ringless

Last Friday I took my wedding ring in for it's biannual cleaning and inspection. The jeweler took a look at it with his loupe, made some hmmmming sounds, and announced the prongs needed to be replaced. He recommended I leave the ring with him so the work could be done right away.

Of course I agreed. There's no way I'd want to have something break and take a chance on losing the diamond. However, that ring's a part of me, and I feel strange without it, since I've been wearing it for 31 years. The first day I kept looking down at my finger, not see the ring, and get a sinking feeling that I'd lost it.

It's been a few days now, and I no longer feel panicked when I see my ringless hand. However, I've noticed something interesting. There's a definite "ring dent" where my finger was covered by the band on the palm side of my hand, and the area on my finger where my ring sits is smaller, a permanent symbol of what's usually there.

Fortunately, I don't have to rely on symbolism much longer. The ring is done and I'm picking it up today on my way to work. It will be good to have it back.

  1. I had my diamond ring inspected for the first time when it was 20 years old. Little did I know that the prongs were worn and the jeweler said the diamond was about to fall out. One prong was even broken. Prevention is always better, right?

  2. glad you're getting the ring repaired, it's so upsetting losing precious things.

  3. The diamond fell out of my ring (thankfully I was able to find it!) and I had to have my rings cut off. I was like you. It felt strange!

We couldn't afford to have it fixed at the time so I got a plain gold band to wear so I wouldn't feel so naked.

Later, after we got mine fixed, I kept both rings and often wear them together.

Better to do like you and keep up with it before it becomes a problem so you don't have to feel naked! :)

  4. When I was pregnant with my twins, my wedding ring got so tight I had to take it off. I was just able to pull off the diamond ring, but had to cut off the band : ( Life continued, as it does, until I realized one day that I had not worn my wedding ring for 4 years! I really missed it! I took it in to the jeweler and had them re-size/mend the ring and am happily wearing it again.

  5. It's funny, but I no longer wear my engagement diamond. It's in the safety deposit box. I just wear the band. I guess I don't like things on my fingers.
